University of Richmond

The Department of English offers students deep engagement with literary study, a pursuit that develops writing and critical reading abilities along with strengthening communications skills and critical thinking.

For students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree, the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences also offers a Master of Arts in English.

In addition to the study of literature, the English major covers a wide range of topics in its courses, from composition theory to creative writing to film studies. With small class sizes and faculty specializing in a variety of areas, students are exposed to a teaching style that encourages dialogue, and have access to faculty advisors who can match their area of interest and provide individual attention.

Along with a challenging curriculum, students have many opportunities to enrich their English major with research or experiential learning, which includes internships and study abroad. Some students may choose to take advantage of a bridge experience, which allows them to use the skills they have learned as an English major in an international setting.

With the skills gained as an English major at Richmond, students can move on to excel in graduate school or any number of careers. Not only can English majors be found in the traditional areas of writing, editing or publishing, but in fields such as business, politics, journalism or medicine.
