Planning Your Program
Richmond offers one major, two minors, two concentrations and an honors program through the English department, as well as the Allied Fields option. Once students declare the English major, typically some time during their sophomore year, they are assigned a faculty member who will serve as their advisor and help them develop a program of study to achieve their educational goals.
Students who are interested in combining their English major with a minor in education should consult the Department of English's teacher education advisor as soon as they begin considering a career in education.
At the heart of the English curriculum are courses that cover a range of literature from early America to South Asia to the Caribbean, from Medieval to Victorian to Postmodern periods. Other courses examine children’s literature or poetry as well as literature in relation to globalization, regionalism or racism. Writing courses cover topics from stage writing to nonfiction composition, and advanced courses can combine literature and language with film, drama, gender studies or literary criticism.
In addition to a rich and challenging curriculum, students may then round out their experience working on the staff of the University of Richmond’s literary magazine The Messenger or as a tutor at the Writing Center.
