Experiential Learning
Four walls can’t contain an entire education. That’s why, at Richmond, most students extend their educations by participating in experiential learning opportunities. They’re the chance to take what you’ve learned in the classroom and apply it to the real world, either via research, an internship or study abroad.
Internships
English majors have a range of internship opportunities. Students may intern for publications, in writing or editing, or they can use their communication skills to find positions in fields like marketing or public relations. Internships provide exciting career options and valuable experience to students looking for post-graduate direction.
Students who are interested in securing internships should visit the Career Development Center for more information. Students who wish to receive academic credit through the English department for writing- or editing-intensive internships should be sure to read the department's internship guidelines thoroughly before beginning their search.
Study Abroad
English students benefit greatly from broadening their worldview with a study abroad experience. Students often find that the time in another country, and even using another language, can contribute new perspectives to their English program of study. The University of Richmond was recently recognized as the “Hottest College for International Studies” and it’s no wonder. Nearly 70 percent of students study abroad. The Department of English recommends students spend as much time as their schedule will allow in another country. Advisors are dedicated to helping students transfer back courses to satisfy Richmond’s academic requirements.
