Resources
A number of special resources enrich students’ experiences studying English at Richmond.
Verse Magazine
The University of Richmond is home to the preeminent journal Verse, which is edited by English professor Brian Henry. Students who take English 393: Literary Editing spend a significant amount of time during the semester editing the poetry magazine.
Sigma Tau Delta Honorary Society
Students who have completed at least nine hours of English coursework above the 100-level with at least a B average in the major and a 3.3 GPA overall are eligible to join Sigma Tau Delta, the national English honor society.
The Messenger Literary Magazine
University of Richmond’s student-run literary and arts magazine The Messenger publishes annually, with submissions in poetry, photography and prose. English majors are encouraged to submit their writing as a first step toward an active publishing career.
Writing Center
The Writing Center provides experienced tutors who offer friendly critiques for written work in any major. To become involved as Writing Fellow or Writing Center Tutor, students must complete an application process to request permission to enroll in the training course, English 383: Composition Theory and Pedagogy. Writing fellows’ main responsibility is to provide appropriate written commentary to a student's rough draft and to meet the student in a brief writing conference to provide feedback and helpful writing tips. Many English majors take advantage of the editing and writing experience gained through this resource.
Discipline-Specific Library Research Guide
Subject librarians at the University of Richmond Libraries maintain discipline-specific research guides for every academic course of study offered through the School of Arts & Sciences. Students in the Department of English can contact the subject librarian directly, view top recommended resources and conduct discipline-specific searches of databases and Web sites. In addition, subject librarians frequently highlight new titles related to the academic field.
Additional research materials that may be of use to English students are Book Reviews and resources for Children's Literature.
