Welcome to the Department of English

The study of literature is more than just the critical analysis of written works throughout the centuries — it is the study of human cultural production and aesthetic experience. Students approaching graduation, in particular, ask ‘Why English?’ when confronted with the prospect of finding a career. Many students feel they must choose between personal interest and career preparation, between the kind of intellectual interests they would like to pursue and the realities of a tight job market. However, employers recruiting at Richmond say they want graduates who can think and express themselves effectively, who have experience with a variety of intellectual methods and perspectives, and who enjoy work that genuinely engages the mind.

Most English majors have an avid appreciation of literature as well as a love of language and writing. As a result, the curriculum not only strengthens their writing skills and stimulates critical thinking but also engages their passions.

Courses

Most students in the English department come into the major with a genuine love of literature and the desire to grow as a writer. Classes are designed to nurture these interests, from the general requirements all the way through the seminars, with professors challenging their students at every level of the major.

The Department of English has made a commitment to small class sizes, especially for advanced classes and seminars, to encourage class discussion. Along with their own views, English faculty members present a variety of critical perspectives when leading discussions. The questions and opinions of the students are an essential addition to this range of viewpoints. Creative writing classes are structured to allow students to critique each other’s work — a process that helps them develop as readers as well as writers.

Department of English Writers Series

Programs

A number of special programs enrich students’ experiences studying English at Richmond. The Writers Series is designed to expose Richmond students, the greater university community, and city residents to some of today’s most celebrated writers. Every other year, a distinguished writer in residence joins the English department for a semester to teach creative writing. English department programming also includes a lecture series, master classes, and NEH courses.

Honors & Awards

The English Department Honors Program allows students to deepen and enrich their knowledge of literature beyond what would normally be required by the major. The program is designed for strong, academically motivated students who wish to advance their skills in analysis, research, and writing.
