Verse

Founded in 1984 in Oxford, England, Verse has been co-edited by Brian Henry since 1995. As of 2005, the University of Richmond has provided a home for the magazine. Verse focuses on contemporary English-language poetry, poetry in translation, innovative fiction and cross-genre writing, interviews with writers, and criticism (book reviews, essays/reviews, and essays). Poems from Verse have been awarded the Pushcart Prize and have appeared in The Norton Anthology of Contemporary Poetry and numerous editions of the Best American Poetry. Special issues of Verse include a feature on Australian poetry, a triple issue with features on Mexican poetry and Indian poetry, two issues devoted to prose, a triple issue on French poetry and poetics, two issues devoted to the poetic sequence, and a feature on younger American poets.

Students taking English 393 will learn about the editorial process through Verse and will have the opportunity to write for the Verse site. By publishing in Verse, students can join the ranks of Verse contributors like the leading scholar Marjorie Perloff, world-renowned poets Paul Celan, Yannis Ritsos, John Ashbery, Tomaz Salamun, Kenneth Koch, James Tate, Charles Simic, Charles Wright, Medbh McGuckian, C.D. Wright, Yusef Komunyakaa, Paul Muldoon, Rae Armantrout, and Hayden Carruth, and cutting edge fiction writers like Diane Williams, Javier Marias, Gerald Murnane, and Joshua Harmon.
