Christine Schutt

Christine Schutt is one of America’s preeminent literary novelists, a finalist for both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in fiction. She is the author of three novels (Florida, All Souls, and Prosperous Friends) and two short-story collections (Nightwork and A Night, A Day, Another Night, Summer), the former of which was chosen by poet John Ashbery as the best book of 1996 for the Times Literary Supplement. Her work has been broadly anthologized, including in the prestigious O. Henry and Pushcart prize collections, as well as in The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories.

An experienced teacher, Schutt has held visiting professorships in a number of highly-regarded programs, including UC-Irvine, Syracuse, and Hollins. She is a regular guest on the faculty at Columbia University and also teaches at the Nightingale-Bamford School, a private girls’ school in New York City. In addition, she is a frequent workshop leader at the well-known Sewanee Writers’ Conference.

Beyond writing and teaching, Schutt is a Contributing Editor at NOON, the literary annual published by Diane Williams. She lives in New York City, where she has received grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Guggenheim foundation. Literary success is contagious in her family; her son, Will Schutt, won the 2012 Yale Series of Younger Poets Award.

She will join the University of Richmond faculty for the spring 2015 semester.
