Minor in Education
English majors interested in elementary, middle or secondary teaching need to notify the Department of Education as soon as they decide upon one of these paths. In addition, these students also need to meet with the English department's teacher education advisor prior to registration each semester for help in planning their schedules.
Meeting with the teacher education advisor is especially important for those specializing in secondary education, who will need help 1) selecting English courses specifically required by the State Board of Education and 2) planning for several courses offered only once each year that must be completed for licensure (and, in the case of English 383: Introduction to Composition Theory and Pedagogy, prior to student teaching in the fall of the senior year).
