Writing Resources

You will find the following tips useful in writing papers in all of your English classes — from introductory courses to advanced seminars: avoiding plagiarism, starting out and editing, crafting strong arguments, paragraphs and transitions, close reading and analyzing quotations, and working with critical sources.

Writing Center

The Writing Center provides experienced tutors who offer friendly critiques for written work in any major. To become involved as a Writing Fellow or Writing Center Tutor, students must complete an application process to request permission to enroll in the training course, English 383: Composition Theory and Pedagogy. Writing fellows’ main responsibility is to provide appropriate written commentary to a student's rough draft and to meet the student in a brief writing conference to provide feedback and helpful writing tips. Many English majors take advantage of the editing and writing experience gained through this resource.

In addition, the Writing Center has developed a series of “Writing-in-the-Disciplines” handbooks, including one for writing English research papers.

Discipline-Specific Library Research Guide

Subject librarians at the University of Richmond Libraries maintain discipline-specific research guides for every academic course of study offered through the School of Arts & Sciences. Students in the Department of English can contact the subject librarian directly, view top recommended resources, and conduct discipline-specific searches of databases and websites. In addition, subject librarians frequently highlight new titles related to the academic field.
